DUPLEX STRAINERS

Duplex Strainers are designed to continuously remove unwanted particles from liquids and do not require interruption of the flow for strainer basket cleaning.  They are typically used for continuous applications or for applications that do not allow for temporary shut-down of the flow for strainer basket cleaning.

 

The initial clean differential pressure for duplex strainers should be ≤ 2 PSI for most applications and the strainer baskets should be cleaned prior to the differential pressure exceeding 15 PSI.

 

To safely access the strainer basket, it requires diverting the flow through the other strainer basket chamber, effectively isolating the basket chamber you want to access  from the system pressure and flow rate.

 

Next open the duplex strainer vent and/or drain valves to relieve the system pressure within the basket chamber, making it easier to remove the strainer basket chamber cover.

 

Most of our duplex strainer covers can be removed without tools; some designs require removing nuts from studs.  Once the cover is removed and sufficient fluid drained, the strainer basket can be lifted from the strainer body and cleaned.

 

Cleaning should be done by rinsing with an appropriate, compatible fluid.  Compressed air and brushes can also be used for dislodging material not easily rinsed off.

 

Sometimes it's easier to have a spare basket to swap in service and let the dirty basket soak for easier cleaning.

 

The type of diverting valve used depends upon the size of the strainer and the other aspects of the application requirements, such as initial differential pressure drop and viscosity, temperature and pressure for the application.
